GESCI (Geodeland Earth Science Clubs Inc.)

An organization comprised of eight Illinois clubs:

  • Central Illinois Gem & Mineral Club, Decatur, IL;
  • Edwards River Earth Science Club, Aledo, IL;
  • Lincoln Orbit Earth Science Club, Springfield, IL;
  • West Central Illinois Rock and Mineral Club, Macomb, IL;
  • Peoria Academy of Science Geology Section, Peoria, IL;
  • Fulton county Rockhounders, Canton, IL;
  • Siloam Springs Earth Science Club, Mt Sterling, IL;
  • Worthern Earth Searchers of Hancock County, Carthage, IL;

GESCI's purpose is to provide a show venue for these clubs every year in Macomb IL. in March. Our club’s representatives for this organization are- Tony Kapta, Regina Kapta and Mary Bertram. Our Club's assigned job for the planning of the show is the program committee. We are also responsible for helping to supply material for the silent auction and the children's spin and win as well as help with the running of the show.

The reason we are involved with this organization is to further promote one of our clubs objectives: to help educate people in geology, mineralogy and the lapidary arts.

MWF (Midwest Federation of Mineralogical & Geological Societies)

Organized in 1940 and is one of the four founders of the AFMS. The MWF consists of 111 clubs consisting of 5990 adults and 607 juniors located in Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Missouri, Iowa, Minnesota and parts of North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska and Arkansas
Part of our annual dues are paid to the MWF so all of us are also members of this federation thru our club. Our club also is enrolled in the insurance program thru the MWF which is also paid thru part of your dues. The MWF has a yearly show, selected and held thru one of the regional member clubs.

AFMS (American Federation of Mineralogical Societies)

Organized in 1947 and consists of 7 regional federations. They are the:

MWF (Midwest Federation of Mineralogical & Geological Societies)

Eastern Federation of Mineralogical and Lapidary Societies, Inc. (over 150 clubs with over 10.000 member from Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia and West Virginia),

Southeast Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. (about 80 clubs from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and some clubs from Kentucky, Louisiana, Virginia),

South Central Federation of Mineralogical Societies (about 40 clubs from Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas),

Rocky Mountain Federation of Mineralogical Societies (Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Utah, Wyoming and the western portions of Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota,

California Federation of Mineralogical Societies, Inc. (about 150 clubs from California, Hawaii, Nevada and some clubs from Arizona)

Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Societies (about 80 clubs with over 4400 members from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, Washington, and some clubs from Utah).


Part of our dues that are paid to the MWF go for dues to the AFMS so again we are all members of the AFMS. They also have a yearly show, held thru one of the regional clubs. Clubs belonging to this group also accept and honor the Code of Ethics for rockhunters.

The 2009 GESCI Show will be held March 14, 10 to 6 and March 15, 10 to 5, at the Western Illinois University Student Union Ballroom on Murray Street in Macomb, Illinois. Admission is Free, with Free parking.

The Amatuer Land Access Association, A.L.A.A. is a 501(c)(4) organization. Its purpose is promoting and ensuring the right of the amateur hobby collecting, recreational prospecting and mining, and the use of public and private lands for educational and recreational purposes; and to carry the voice of all amateur collectors and hobbyists to our elected officials, government regulators and public land managers.
